James McDougal believes gun violence is out of control in his community, and that the NYPD needs to examine its role in the matter. He voiced some of his frustrations during a town hall meeting in front of lawmakers and NYPD top brass on Tuesday at Raymond Bush Playground in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
“I don’t believe the police have accountability,” McDougal said. “I think we have to take a look at that, take a deep look at every single department in the police department.”
City Councilman Robert Cornegy Jr. hosted the town hall and family day with the police department, as violence surges in the city.
The event was held just steps away from where a 1-year-old Davell Gardner was shot and killed earlier this month.
“For a tragic incident, maybe it’s the perfect spot to start, grow again here and try to make something good out of a terrible, terrible, terrible situation,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.
The latest NYPD statistics show murders up citywide by 23% compared to last year. Shootings in Brooklyn North are up by 87%. Widespread calls to defund the police have ramped up following the death of George Floyd.
“The reality is, we never wanted to abolish the police, we wanted policing in our community that’s consistent with not violating our civil rights or human rights,” said Cornegy.
The event also included games, food, and entertainment. Activists said building trust between the community and the NYPD is an important part of the solution.
“We can’t have people running through the streets shooting around and innocent people, innocent babies and families are destroyed. It has to stop,” said Mike Tucker, who is the founder of the Lay the Guns Down Foundation.
The NYPD said there will be eight more events like this one throughout the summer.
