SAN ANGELO — The Freedom Rally, a peaceful protest by people “sick of the government being in control of our lives,” took place Saturday.
“Freedom of choice needs to make a return in our society, and what better day to exercise our rights and demonstrate our frustration, than 4th of July,” said CoCo Simpson, who organized the event with Caleb Wallace. Wallace said the event was about sending a message to those in charge.
"We are not real happy with the current state of America at the moment," Wallace said. "That's the reason we are here is we know we need to start local and it's a big feat to accomplish and I can't do it alone. And I know there are people out there who believe the same thing."
About 75 people gathered at the Tom Green County Courthouse for the event to express frustration with Gov. Greg Abbott and local health authority orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Signs at the protest also took aim at the media and asked for "journalism not propaganda" and called for people to "defend the police."
After the protest began, people noticed the U.S. flag wasn't flying on the courthouse lawn and raised a flag someone brought to the event.
The group then marched to City Hall before disbanding.
