Walk, run, but don't gather: Houston-area parks will have restrictions for holiday weekend - Houston Chronicle

Most public parks in the Houston area will be open for the Fourth of July weekend, but they will be limited to “active recreation” only, officials said.

That means people can walk, run or exercise in city parks, but they cannot gather socially or convene in groups, according to Houston Parks Director Steve Wright.

“The easiest way to remember this is: Just keep moving,” Wright said.

The city has adopted the restrictions for Saturday only, and its parks will be open as usual Friday and Sunday.

Harris County has adopted a similar policy — people can exercise or use trails, and gatherings are allowed if they include fewer than 10 people from a single household — from dawn Friday through dusk Sunday.

Eleanor Tinsley and Buffalo Bayou parks will be closed Saturday for the city’s “Freedom Over Texas” Independence Day celebration and fireworks show, which begins 7 p.m. The annual event, which will be televised on KTRK Channel 13, will include musical performances from the Houston Symphony, Pat Green, Bun B and Trae Tha Truth, among others.

Memorial Drive between Shepherd and Bagby, and Allen Parkway and its assorted cross streets will be closed 7 a.m. to midnight Saturday.

Sylvan Beach, a county-owned park, will close throughout the weekend, though fishing from the pier will be allowed.
