MACKINAC ISLAND, MI -- Are you planning to watch today’s Mackinac Island Virtual Christmas Tree Lighting?

We talked to Island resident and business owner Trish Martin about today’s Facebook Live event with Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud and Santa Claus and what songs they will be singing.

In a normal year, she leads the community through several traditional Christmas carols as they gather around the downtown Christmas tree.

Martin, who opened Bogan Lane Inn B&B in 1977 and writes a natural history column for the Town Crier, has been leading sing-along carols for 30-plus years.

It’s hard to imagine a virtual event, she said.

“I love the great community spirit,” Martin said. “Everybody comes along and gets to sing the carols. It really kicks off the Christmas holiday, and Bazaar, and all the things we do.

“This year is going to be very different. But that’s ok. We need everybody to be safe.”

This year she is singing solo.

The songs

“O’ Christmas Tree” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and possibly one or two more.

It’s won’t be a long ceremony, said Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is hosting the Facebook Live event.

He is expecting it to last about 7-10 minutes.

It’s the spirit of keeping this piece of “Americana” alive for residents, and those who annually travel to Mackinac Island for the Christmas Bazaar.

“Covid can’t take everything away from us,” Hygh said. “There are some traditions that need to live on. Even though we can’t share it with people that love Mackinac Island, in person, at least we can do it through the Virtual Facebook event.”

Christmas Bazaar

The annual Christmas Bazaar fundraiser for Mackinac Island churches and medical center typically takes place at the Mackinac Island Community Hall. Events usually continue all weekend with live auctions, silent auctions, raffles, sale tables and more.

This year’s virtual event has been a success. It continues until noon Dec. 13.

“We made the decision to go virtual vs simply canceling,” organizers posted on its Facebook page.

“We hope you can feel the joy of Christmas and hear the clip clop of the horses as you browse the auction. There is a learning curve and we realize it’s not perfect, but we hope you have fun with our auction, snowmobile raffle and Christmas raffle. Consider a donation if you don’t see anything you need or want.”
