We need a different approach to COVID-19 than Kate Brown’s. I am concerned that her extreme shutdowns are affecting local businesses. And I am concerned about the social well-being of my children as I fight every day to create a thriving environment in our home in the midst of this challenging season.

We are a family of six, with four children. The governor’s mandate that in-home gatherings have no more than six people with a maximum of two households discriminates against larger families. We spent Thanksgiving by ourselves this year. It was emotionally hard for our family. I ask that Gov. Brown change the limit to no more than two households but without a size limit. This would allow us to see my sister and her husband and their baby at Christmas. It would allow my son, when he turns 16 in January, to invite one friend over to spend the night.

This is a very isolating time. We have done our best to abide by the heart of the law. The scariest thing was when Gov. Brown said there would be fines and jail time for violators (“Oregon Gov. Kate Brown says large parties could trigger fines or jail time during coronavirus ‘freeze’,” Nov. 14). Expecting neighbors to report on each other breaks communities apart at a time when we really need to be there for each other, even if it’s from a distance. I hate the idea that if we bent the rules to have another household in our home that our neighbors could report us and we could have cops showing up at the door.
