SUPERIOR, WI -- The main activities of the 2021 Lake Superior Ice Festival kicked off Saturday.
Hundreds gathered at the festival at Barker's Island in Superior, Wisconsin, which featured ice carving, snowshoeing, and a snow slide.
There are also 25 ice sculptures located throughout town for viewing.
This year, all activities are outside with no warming tent.
People could still grab some hot drinks and tasty food from the vendors.
This is Josh and Jamie Howie's first year to attend along with their two daughters.
"It's wonderful," Jamie said. "It's nice to be able to do something outside and bring the girls. Get out of the house. Get some fresh air."
With motor racing, ice carving, and bonfires to keep people warm, there is something for the whole family.
"We really wanted to bring the girls to be able to see all of the characters that they had today," Josh said. "We got to see Anna, Elsa, and Olaf, and Belle and the Beast, so that was a lot of fun."
For the first time, the Humane Society of Douglas County partnered with the festival and raised money for animals in need.
Humane Society of Douglas County Fundraising and Events Coordinator Cheri Fitch said they more than doubled their fundraising goal.
"Our fundraising goal was $3,500 and we are at $7,200, so thank you to the community," Fitch said.
The weather also provided snow globe flurries, which made for a true winter experience.
"I think it's beautiful out," Fitch said. "I love the snow, and it's warmer than I thought it would be so that makes me very happy."
The festival allowed the Howie family to expend some energy and enjoy the outdoors.
"It's been really important to be able to come out and do something like this outside," Josh said.
"With being stuck inside, they're 2 and a half, so it's important to be able to get outside and wear some of that energy out," Jamie said.
The festival capped off the fun-filled day with a firework show.
While most activities have wrapped up, people can still participate in the ice sculpture trivia scavenger hunt.
The contest runs through February 12th.
