CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - At least 300 hundred people gathered at the Wyoming State Capitol Building as Florida Congressman, Matt Gaetz, visited Wyoming for the first time.
“I’ve been here for about an hour, and I feel like I already know the place a lot better than your misguided Representative Liz Cheney,” Gaetz said.
Rep. Gaetz was met with praise throughout his speech, challenging Rep. Cheney on a number of issues and encouraging Wyomingites to vote her out when the time comes.
“We are at a battle for the soul of the Republican party and I intend to win it. You can help me break a corrupt system, you can send a representative who actually represents you and you can send Liz Cheney home, back home to Washington, D.C.”
Gaetz’s messaged was echoed by political activist, and son of former President Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr, who called the Florida Congressman during his speech.
“Since the people of Wyoming are clearly not thrilled with Liz Cheney, let’s find someone who can replace her and actually do that job well,” said Trump Jr.
The majority of Wyomingites who attended the gathering supported Gaetz’s message.
“I think it’s time for Liz Cheney to leave. She had a choice to make and she chose the other side,” said Wyoming resident,, Chi Connolly.
“If she cannot support the president of her party, she should not be in the Republican party,” said Wyoming resident, Juanita Claycomb.
But not every Wyomingite in attendance shared the same views.
“He’s coming here because he feels this is an easy state for him to rile up and use his rhetoric for, and that doesn’t represent Wyoming,” said Wyoming resident, Sam Miller.
When asked what factors make a trip like this successful, Gaetz had this to say:
“I’m here to be the masthead for the America First movement going forward, and what I see is energy, and positivity, and love of country, and patriotism in gathering’s like this, and I look forward to having a lot more of them around the country.”
The gathering stayed peaceful throughout its entirety. Although Congresswoman Cheney was not available for an interview this week, Wyoming News Now is hopeful we can speak with her next week.
