Candles in the snow remembered lives lost, while signs in the sky advocated for justice and due process.
Carl Sack, organizer of the event, said he hopes to see the public come together and defend democracy.
“We need to be the ones—the people, black, white, native, young, old, everybody—we need to stand up and say no,” Sack said.
Leif Ringsred, a retired Duluth teacher, echoed calls on the capital—saying he would like to see President Donald Trump removed from office.
“I think we have a mad man in the White House,” Ringsred said. “Somebody has shed their blood for this man now and I couldn’t sleep last night and I had to come down and at least make my opinion expressed.”
Scott Bol, a Duluth community member, said he would like to see the true results of the election through.
“We want to respect the results of the election. It was clear who won. You can’t have your own facts,” Bol said. “We’re outraged that this assault happened on the US capitol.”
Zee Lemke, another Duluth community member, said she wanted to protect those she loves most and make future elections a positive thing for generations to come.
“The motto for this little vigil thing is to defend democracy, defend the earth and defend each other and I think that’s really what it’s about,” Lemke said. “It’s about protecting each other from people who would hurt people I really care about.”
In total, about two dozen people participated in the event at City Hall. It remained peaceful and most everyone wore masks.
