From Britney to Blake Lively: Monique Lhuillier dishes on dressing celebs - Page Six

Over the past 25 years, Monique Lhuillier has designed dreamy red carpet creations for A-listers ranging from Taylor Swift to Michelle Obama — not to mention dressed celebrity brides including Britney Spears and Reese Witherspoon.

“My designs celebrate romance, femininity and unparalleled glamour,” the LA-based Lhuillier told Page Six Style. “They make women feel the best versions of themselves as they celebrate their special milestones.”

In fact, it was the designer’s search for her own bridal gown that inspired her to launch her brand back in 1996.

“I was a fashion school graduate and newly engaged,” she recalled. “I began the search for the perfect wedding dress and found myself unsatisfied with the selections, and realized there was an opportunity to offer something new to the industry.”

In the early aughts, Lhuillier expanded her wedding-focused label to include ready-to-wear — with a little help from her first-ever celebrity client, Angelina Jolie, who attended the 2002 Golden Globes in a decidedly un-bridal black gown.

Since then, the designer’s amassed plenty more famous fans — many of whom are spotlighted in her new book, “Monique Lhuillier: Dreaming of Fashion and Glamour,” which documents her past two-and-a-half decades in the industry.

Below, Lhuillier walks Page Six Style through a few of her greatest Hollywood hits thus far.

“This was the first time my name was said on the red carpet. When her stylist called me to make her a dress, I was so excited for the opportunity. She had seen a white dress in my collection and asked if I could make it in black. Angelina wanted something classic and dramatic, which is why she paired the pearls with the gown.”

“Britney was at the height of her career when her team reached out to me to design her wedding dress. She was incredibly down to earth, sweet and kind. She had a childlike excitement about the process. We had multiple fittings in undisclosed locations to avoid paparazzi. I designed her gown, neckpiece, gloves and a beautiful cathedral-length veil. I also designed her second lace minidress and dressed her entire bridal party.”

“Working with Reese was magical; she was radiant and breathtakingly beautiful. After she wore this dress, I knew blush gowns were here to stay! Her daughter was her maid of honor, so she asked me to design her dress as well. Ava’s dress was a variation of Reese’s with a matching satin ribbon around the waist. Later on, she changed into a white minidress dress I designed, which she paired with cowboy boots to celebrate her Southern roots.”

“I have dressed Taylor many times, and this is one of my favorite looks I worked with her on. It had all the right components; classic yet modern. The moment she put it on, we knew it was perfect. I loved the color combination and how she styled it with the nude shoe.”

“I had the privilege of dressing Mrs. Obama several times and this was one of my favorite looks. Her stylist selected a design from the runway, but we completely customized it for her. We still have her custom form that we draped on. It was a very memorable moment.”

“Blake specifically chose this runway look from my archives. It was the only look we sent to her and it worked so effortlessly! She knows her personal style very well, so working with her was a seamless process. I loved the contrast of the leather corseted belt over the lace and organza skirt. She stunned on the red carpet!”

“I created a custom wedding dress for Dakota Johnson’s character in ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ the same way I would for any of my bespoke bridal clients. I collaborated with the film’s costume designer and Dakota to create this off-the-shoulder lace fit-to-flare gown. I was sent the script to read and created multiple sketches until we settled on the perfect design. The gown came to life beautifully.”

“We reserved this runway look especially for Phoebe. ‘Fleabag’ was at the height of its success, and Phoebe was radiant in the gown. It was the perfect choice for her. She was comfortable, and the six Emmys she won that night were her best accessories.”
