Lottie Lee Franklin Lively came into this world on July 3, 1929. She was born in Cotulla to Claude and Ida May Franklin and raised in Cotulla and on her family ranch in McMullen County. She was an original Brush Country babe, crowned Queen of the Cotulla Fourth of July Rodeo and Cowboys Cheerleader and graduated CHS in 1946.
After graduating college from Texas A&I Kingsville, she married Bill Houston Lively of Dilley on July 29, 1950. They lived in Austin, El Paso, San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Lottie and Bill then settled in Giddings in 1960 and bought into the Bluebonnet Pharmacy. It was not long before she became the Queen of Giddings, as well. Lottie was a permanent fixture in the “front-end” of the Bluebonnet, which was the popular spot for friends to stop and chat, buy gifts, shop for cosmetics and pick up prescriptions. Lottie managed it all and loved her community. When she wasn’t helping customers, giving advice, etc., Lottie was raising her children with Bill—Brenda and Lee. Known for her superb cooking, which she began at the early age of five, she was forever hosting neighborhood coffee and dinner parties. Lottie was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, the Giddings Study Club and Bridge Club. She lost her husband, Bill, in 1986 and was blessed to find a second great love, Glenn Hamilton, and they married in 1992.
She moved back to her beloved Brush Country in 2003 and spent the remainder of her life in the Free State of McMullen County. She loved family and friends and was well-known for her feisty temperament, mischievous character and loyal friendship.
Lottie was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Ida May Franklin; her brother, Claude “Pudge” Franklin, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Joe Wotipka, and husbands, Bill Lively, Glenn Hamilton and Neil Hollan.
Lottie passed away at the ranch on November 10, 2021. She was 92. She is survived by her son, Lee, and daughter-in-law, Marie; her sister-in-law, Elaine Franklin; nieces and nephews, Craig Franklin (Suzanne), Kathy Smith (Rick), Walt Franklin (Mary) and Peggy Steinle (Lee); great nieces and nephews, Christina Smith, Gretchen (Cody) Cruthirds, Sara (Trey) Cook, Weston Smith, Matt (Sarah) Franklin, Stevo (Katie) Franklin, and James Steinle; and great-great nieces, Lila Cook and Cecilia Cruthirds and great-great nephew, Campbell Cruthirds; first cousins, Pat Thurman and John Franks (Lynne) Morgan and numerous long-time friends.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 302 Center Street in Cotulla. Memorial services are still pending in Giddings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be donated to the First United Methodist Church in Giddings at 279 Monroe St., Giddings, Texas 78942; The Claude Franklin, Jr. Memorial Scholarship at Spirit of Texas Bank, P.O. Box 299, Tilden, Texas 78072, or a charity of your choice.
