Garner will hope to kick on after lively cameo from the bench - The Athletic

There were few moments that were greeted with such positivity last summer than when it was confirmed James Garner would return to Nottingham Forest.

A delay, while he agreed a new contract with Manchester United, prompted a sense of nervousness in the East Midlands, while also ensuring that he did not arrive for a second loan spell until August 22.

The scale of the impact the midfielder made during his first loan was such that there was a collective sigh of relief around Nottingham when the news was announced, following significant rival interest, including from Derby, where Wayne Rooney had hoped to exploit his Old Trafford connections.

Fast forward three months and the mood has changed ever so slightly. But that is as much a reflection on others as it is on the 20-year-old.

Last season Garner, after making his debut in a 2-1 win at Coventry, was not only involved in every Forest game but his assured nature on the ball — along with his goal threat — were a significant catalyst as a side that had struggled steadily edged themselves away from any threat of relegation.

Garner started 19 Championship games and made one sub appearance, scoring four goals. While he started Steve Cooper’s first two games in charge following the head coach’s appointment in late September, Garner has been in the starting line-up only twice since.

But there is a bigger picture: that is not just a reflection on Garner, but also on the form of Ryan Yates and Jack Colback.

Yates has progressed as much as anyone this season when he has been one of the most consistent, impressive performers under both Hughton and Cooper.

“All the people who have consistently hammered him need to take a look at themselves now and think that he has some value to this club.
