WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE)- Hundreds of former and current students at Pilgrim High School gathered for a candle light vigil in honor of Principal Gerry Habershaw.
Habershaw died due to a heart attack Saturday night.
“He made everyone happy, he never let anyone down,” Former Pilgrim High School Student Adam Borges said. “Even if you were a bad kid, he would make sure you succeed in life he would never give up on you.”
“He knew every student by name, I’m sure every student here could tell a story about him,” Lexi Galligan said.
“He looked at all of us differently, he talked to us not like students, not like kids but like people,” Lamantia said.
Before Habershaw’s death, school district officials were looking into the school’s homecoming earlier this month, where many people were seen not wearing masks in violation of school district policy.
She says the Homecoming dance was one of the last times she saw her principal.
“He was just having a great time and wanted us to have a great time, he deserved a lot better.”
On Sunday morning Warwick Schools Superintendents office released a statement on Habershaw’s death:
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Gerry Habershaw. He was a beloved member of the Warwick School Community and a mentor, friend and colleague of us all. Our condolences go out to his family and the Pilgrim Community. Gerry always cared about his students and staff.”
