Rhinelander - The issue of COVID vaccine mandates continues to divide Americans. It has sparked protests around the country, including one in Rhinelander. A group of anti-COVID vaccine mandate protesters gathered on the corner of Oneida Avenue and Kemp Street Saturday afternoon.
"Letting people know that there are people who are not OK with mandates and how it can possibly affect us," said Jessica, one of the "freedom rally" protestors. She continued saying that mandating vaccines in the workplace and schools is a bad idea for rural communities. "Upset about the mandates that are happening and I said we gotta do something in the community to let people know we are not OK with this so I started on Facebook and word just got around."
The point they make is about freedom of choice, but supporters of mandates say that choosing not to be vaccinated has consequences.
"That we should all have the choice of what happens to our bodies and goes into our bodies. It should be a choice. We're in America. We're in the land of the free, so we should be free to do that," said Colleen, another protestor.
Jessica continued, "This is about choice and if we don't stand up right now, a lot of people are gonna be losing jobs over it and losing our right to make those decisions."
