Will Jim Harbaugh Leave Michigan After the National Championship?

Just two days before Jim Harbaugh will coach Michigan in the College Football Playoff national championship, multiple NFL teams are “making calls” to gather information on him, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported. The chatter continues to grow about his potential return to the league.

Harbaugh has also “updated staff lists and has evaluated openings in anticipation of a potential return to pro football” following the national title game, Rapoport and Pelissero reported. Entering the CFP, it looked like another offseason of NFL rumors around Harbaugh, and things are trending in that direction again. Harbaugh recently hired NFL agent Don Yee, who represents Tom Brady and Sean Payton, among others.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler previously reported Harbaugh wouldn’t address a potential NFL future until after the national championship. Rapoport and Pelissero reported the Los Angeles Chargers as a team that could consider speaking with Harbaugh after the departure of Brandon Staley. He played for the Chargers at the end of his playing career, meaning he’s familiar with the organization.

In addition, the Las Vegas Raiders could also express interest after moving on from Josh McDaniels. Harbaugh played for the team when it was in Oakland and got his coaching start with the organization as a quarterbacks coach from 2000-02. Rapoport and Pelissero also pointed out Harbaugh’s connection to the Chicago Bears, who drafted him in 1987, if they decide to move on from Matt Eberflus.

Jim Harbaugh has faced questions about a possible NFL return throughout the CFP

Harbaugh’s NFL resume is perhaps the most impressive for a college coach. He had a 44-19-1 record with the San Francisco 49ers and appeared in a Super Bowl — which he lost to his brother John and his Baltimore Ravens. He received interest from teams the last couple offseasons, notably the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 and the Denver Broncos last year.

Michigan has also been preparing a new contract extension for Harbaugh, as The Wolverine has reproted, and NFL Network previously said it would be for 10 years and $125 million. The kicker, however, is a clause that would preclude Harbaugh from entertaining NFL openings this offseason.

Throughout the last few weeks as Harbaugh and Michigan rattled off a run to the national championship, he received questions about whether or not he’d return to the league. He said multiple times he’s maintaining a “one-track mind” and his keeping his focus on winning the next game.

That was again the case on Saturday during CFP national championship media day. When asked whether Monday’s game would impact his interest in going back to the NFL, Harbaugh kept the focus on being in Houston for the title game.

“I couldn’t be more happy to be here,” Harbaugh said. “This is a tremendous city. They do everything big in Texas, and this is cool. This is right where we want to be. This is where we worked, to get there.”
