DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - A large group gathered at Bayside Academy Wednesday afternoon to remember a woman being called a devoted mother.
Elizabeth Atkinson was hit and killed Tuesday morning when she was picking up spilled luggage on Highway 181 in Daphne.
The tragedy has rattled the Bayside Community.
Investigators said the 47-year-old wife and mother was heading on a girls trip with her two daughters and their two friends when some luggage spilled out of her vehicle.
Police said she was trying to pick up the clothing when she was hit. It happened around 6:20 a.m.
Bayside Academy posted a statement to Facebook:
“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the recent passing of bayside parent, Elizabeth Atkinson. On behalf of the administration and our school, we offer our deepest condolences to the Atkinson family.”
Wednesday, Daphne Police said the data recorder from the vehicle that struck Atkinson confirmed it was traveling at or near the speed limit. They also said the driver was not impaired, adding he was on his way home from working overnight.
Atkinson leaves behind her husband and two daughters, both of whom attend Bayside Academy.
One is set to graduate this year.
