A peaceful protest gathered outside the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo Tuesday, July 7, calling for justice in the killing of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén, whose body was discovered Sunday in a shallow grave in Texas near Fort Hood.
Guillén was declared missing in April after confiding to her family that she had been sexually harassed by another service member. Authorities named Army Specialist Aaron Robinson as the prime suspect; he committed suicide last week as police closed in on him.
Around 50 people stood along the corner of El Segundo Boulevard and Douglas Street calling for community support and to urge stronger measures to protect members of the military against sexual crimes.
“Its horrifying the Vanessa had to die, but if she can be the catalyst that ends this then its our duty to help bring about that change,” said Lourdes Amezcua, one of the three women who organized the protest.

While the #MeToo movement in 2017 saw many powerful and prominent men, mostly in the entertainment industry, face accountability for their sexual misconduct, active service members were not given an equal platform to voice their allegations, the protesters said.
“Its been far too long that women have been silenced in the military, especially women of color,” Iris Flores, 26, East Los Angeles said. “If this is happening by our own troops on our soil, imagine what they’re doing overseas.”
Oncoming traffic blared their car horns in support as protesters chanted such slogans as “Who are we? Vanessa’s army.”
Protesters also urged Congress to pass the #IAMVANESSAGUILLEN bill, proposed by Guillen’s family to help protect both men and women from sexual harassment in the armed forces.
