— About 100 people gathered at Durham City Hall on Friday to speak about the incident last month when Durham police drew their weapons on three boys who were playing tag, one of whom was handcuffed for a brief period.

Many mothers, children and other supporters came together for a little over an hour to speak, offer words of encouragement and denounce the actions taken by the police. Fifteen-year-old Jaylin Harris and Zakarryya Cornelius, now 9, said they were playing tag with an 11-year-old friend outside the Rochelle Manor Apartments complex on Aug. 21 when police officers confronted them.

Harris said the officers patted him down and handcuffed him, all while guns remained pointed at him and his young friends.

Durham police chief comments on controversial response

After the story first aired on WRAL News, Durham Police Chief C.J. Davis said in a statement the department was investigating the matter. She also spoke with the boys and their families about what happened.

Davis also appeared on a WRAL special "Forward Together: Policing and Equality" on Wednesday where she talked about the incident and what happened.

The people who gathered for Friday's event marched to the Durham police headquarters after the speeches. They also spoke there before marching back to City Hall.
