LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – During Tuesday evening’s first presidential debate, local Republicans gathered at Copeland Park for a watch party.
The La Crosse County Republican Party said hundreds of Trump supporters were in the stands enjoying the event on the big screen.
A few familiar faces showed up too, including 3rd Congressional District Candidate Derrick Van Orden and 32nd State Senate Candidate Dan Kapanke.
94th State Assembly Candidate, Kevin Hoyer and 95th State Assembly Candidate, Jerome Gunderson were also there.
Campaign officials said it was great to see the energy.
“When you can get 400 people to come outside and watch the presidential debate, to celebrate what they’re doing together, working hard to try to reelect the president, it just shows the kind of energy that I see all the time when I’m traveling around the country,” said Marc Lotter, Dir. of Strategic Communications for Trump-Pence 2020.
The La Crosse County Democratic Party also planned to hold a watch party but the county chairman told News 8 Now that they decided against it because of the spike in COVID-19 cases and not having a facility to provide safe distancing.
