CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Bonnie Judson spent close to five hours Monday packing bag after bag of apples, honey, challah, cakes, grape juice, candles, and prayer books.

Together, the longtime Coral Springs resident and other volunteers prepared a total of 1,000 bags filled with everything Jewish families need to have a Rosh Hashanah service in their homes.

Next: those 30-40 volunteers will hit the roads in Coral Springs and beyond to deliver the bags to families celebrating the Jewish new year, which starts on Friday evening.

“I’m bringing a bag for my mother and her neighbors at Kings Point,” Judson said. “They haven’t been out in a long time.”

The start of Rosh Hashanah is usually a festive, family-oriented time to visit loved ones and friends, but the Covid-19 pandemic is forcing most to mark the holiday home alone disconnected from their communities.

And so, Chabad Jewish Center on West Atlantic Boulevard in Coral Springs organized Project Sweet New Year to bring the joy of the holiday to people’s homes.

“This is a time of getting together, but, unfortunately, it will be missed this year,” said the center’s Rabbi Yankie Denburg. “So there’s never been a greater time for a touchpoint of love and connecting.”

Part of the goal of the delivery is for volunteers to bring the holiday bags to the homes of people they don’t know.

Using Chabad’s extensive database of the Jewish population in Coral Springs, the volunteers will be coming to the doors of neighbors who may be houses or blocks away and never met.

“We’re bringing them everything they need,” he said. “We want the upcoming Jewish holidays to be meaningful, even in these turbulent times.”
