WEST NYACK — At least 35 vehicles with supporters of President Donald Trump gathered Saturday morning as part of a MAGA Drag the Interstate rally in New York state that's headed to Albany.
"A love of country, supporting our law enforcement, supporting the re-election of Trump," said Yvonne Gasperino, a regional leader for the event, describing the event's message as the crowd gathered in a parking lot near the Palisades Center. "And basically bringing like-minded people together."
There were Trump banners and U.S. flags affixed to vehicles, and messages written on one Jeep's windows said "MAGA law and order" and "Honk for America." On another vehicle, a Second Amendment flag featured the Stars and Stripes background with two guns, "Trump" in large lettering, "law and order," and "the right to keep and bear arms" spread across it.
Cars started gathering ahead of the designated meet time, as people decorated vehicles and took photos. No one was wearing masks or other facial coverings.
As of 10:18 a.m., the caravan lined up and rolled out.
Similar rallies were planned around the country on Saturday, according to MAGA Drag the Interstate's Facebook page.
"By having an event like this, we're not only talking to ourselves but we're reaching an extended audience," said Howard Hellwinkel of North Salem. He added that "the United States gives us equal opportunity — for the last three years, we have been very prosperous because we have had that opportunity. If the socialistic movement takes over in our country, we are going to lose the opportunities that we've had that have made us a prosperous nation and prosperous people."
