Bishop Briggs delivers lively, magnetic alt-rock hour at NYS Fair (Chevy Court review) - syracuse.com

Though the 2021 NYS Fair continues to struggle with attendance, alt-rock singer-songwriter Bishop Briggs seemed completely undeterred by the small starter crowd at her Monday night show.

She burst onstage at 7 p.m. with palpable energy, bouncing between her percussionist and guitarist, belting out full-throated lyrics on her 2016 hit “The Way I Do.”

After a few songs demonstrated Briggs’ stretchy pipes and captivating stage presence, several hundred more folks piled into Chevy Court. Good thing, because she’s a joy to watch.

Briggs delivered a rollicking ride of rock originals (plus one trio of punk/emo covers) for the full hour, punctuating her favorite beats with high jumps and sneaker stomps.

She shined on her best-known songs, harnessing the crowd’s enthusiasm and willingness to sing along to “Champion,” “Wild Horses” and “River,” which peaked at #3 on the U.S. Alternative Chart and gained widespread recognition on TikTok.

“It’s very cool to be here,” Briggs told the crowd. “This place does good things to my skin.”

Indeed, Syracuse’s cloudy skies on Monday night were perhaps a welcome sight for the porcelain-skinned singer. (Born in London as “Sarah McLaughlin,” Bishop Briggs uses a stage name inspired by her parents’ Scottish hometown.)

Briggs doesn’t really dance. She runs, jumps and skips. She bounded back and forth onstage as if training for a race, punk-schoolgirl skirt flapping above large moth and spider tattoos on each thigh.

There were no water breaks. After a delightful trio of punk/emo covers, she crumpled on the stage floor and took a well-deserved moment to catch her breath. “You made my emo dreams come true,” she declared.

But Briggs isn’t a one-note emo kid. She demonstrated strong rock and R&B sensibilities, with a healthy dose of EDM. She paused to compliment a fan’s makeup in the front row. And when she wasn’t galloping across the stage, she was all smiles, flashing a wide, cheesy grin between songs.

Most of her songs didn’t come with a backstory, aside from “Champion,” which Briggs said she wrote when she “wasn’t feeling very empowered.”

“I wrote this because I want you to stay here on Earth, to keep going, because life is difficult,” she said. “If there are people in your life who aren’t supporting you, throw them in the trash.”

The set remained tight for the full hour, though the deafening bass drowned out her low-note lyrics on more than a few songs, especially on “Wild Horses.” Even just one acoustic song would’ve satisfied my interest to hear her powerful voice in a more stripped-down capacity.

Briggs ended the concert with “River,” the 2016 stomp-and-clap anthem that launched a million TikTok dances.

By then, she seemed out of breath. She grinned broadly at the crowd, thanked them for a 20th time, and hopped off the stage to tweet “I LOVE YOU @NYSFair” with three heart emojis.

Fair organizers said a large portion of Monday’s fairgoers — an estimated 21,333 of the 33,541 — attended the Foreigner concert at Chevy Park. But those who came for Bishop Briggs were treated to a lively show from a young talent.
