PARMA, Ohio - Ohio’s largest Hungarian Festival returns. Festivities include delicious food, live musical entertainment, colorful authentic folk costumes, folk dance lessons and more at the 65th annual Hungarian Festival, presented by the American Hungarian Friends of Scouting, on Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the German Central Park, 7863 York Rd., in Parma.

Ohio’s largest Hungarian Festival will commence at 10:30 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony followed at 11 a.m. with Catholic and Protestant church services in Hungarian. The kitchens open at noon serving Hungarian delicacies of stuffed cabbage, fresh sausages, grilled pork steak, chicken paprikas with dumplings, jam filled crepes, and “lángos” (fried dough). The Café Budapest will feature scrumptious tortes, pastries, and espresso coffee. Strudel and fresh baked bread also will be on the menu. All foods are available for take-out.

Musical entertainment will be provided live all afternoon by local talent Walt Mahovlich and Harmonia and from Chicago Alex Udvary and his band. The Hungarian Scout Folk Ensemble and members of the scout troops will perform in their colorful authentic folk costumes throughout the day from 2 to 6 p.m. along with other guest dancers. There will be free Hungarian folk dance lessons for all ages. Programs such as a live animal show, free kids’ activities, a book fair, folk art, and crafts, souvenirs and novelty items for sale will round out the festivities.

All proceeds will benefit and support the activities of the nearly 250 Hungarian boy and girl scouts who are celebrating 70 years of Hungarian scouting in Northeast Ohio. The first Hungarian scout troop in North America was established in Cleveland in 1951.

Admission is $7, free for children under ten. Parking is free, with handicapped spaces near the entrance gate and accessibility throughout the park. No coolers and no pets please. The festival is supported by a generous grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the Bethlen Gabor Foundation in Hungary. For more information call 440/582-1233 or visit www.csbk.org for program times and other details.

Shred day: The immensely popular Shred Your Documents Day returns onSat., Sept. 18 from 9 to noon at the Brecksville Municipal Parking Lot adjacent to the fire station and service department compound on Brecksville Road. Here’s your chance to securely shred all those confidential documents that should not go in the trash. Brecksville businesses are also welcome to bring their material to be shredded.

Because people typically want to be there right at 9 a.m., it is suggested that you arrive later to avoid the line and save you time.

The City is asking everyone who attends to bring a voluntary contribution of canned goods for the Brecksville Pantry, which supplies food monthly to low-income families. The Pantry is always in need of peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, canned vegetables and canned fruit. No kinds of beans are needed. They also need cereal, paper products, bar soap and toothpaste. Gift cards from Heinen’s and Marc’s to purchase meat and orange juice are greatly appreciated.

Please check the expiration date on each item. It is unfortunate so many outdated goods have to be discarded.

Clambake: It’s the Brecksville Firefighters Association’s 51st Annual Clambake and Steak Roast on Sat., Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Brecksville Horticulture Building at 6916 Stadium Drive.

Serving is from 6 to 9 p.m. followed by dancing until midnight and sporting events will be shown on the big screen. Local merchants always provide a ton of door prizes. Proceeds benefit the philanthropic activities of the Firefighters Association.
