After Anna Wintour announced that the annual Met Gala wouldn’t be going ahead because of the coronavirus pandemic, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing for the outfits that never were.

It has given fashion fans a great opportunity to delve back through the archives and Blake Lively’s recent confession has got us doing a double take.

The 32-year-old admitted that she has secretly matched her outfit to the Met Gala carpet for three years in a row.

We weren’t the only ones mind blown by this revelation.

It seems the actor kept her matching plans under tight wraps, because even her good friend Gigi Hadid has been asking questions about the news.

In an Instagram post, Lively wrote: “...when the carpet matches the Blakes. Met Ball 2018, 2017, 2016.”

She then posted her outfits on the three separate occasions and they do, in fact, all match perfectly.

Hadid was the first one to question how Lively managed to make this stroke of genius happen.

“How far in advance do you have to tell Anna what color [sic] to make the carpet?” She questioned - and we’d really like to know the answer to that, too.

Lively, who is famously her own stylist, really pulled the past three years out of the bag.

It begun in 2016. She walked the pink-toned carpet three weeks after her and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, announced Lively’s pregnancy.

Styling yourself for a Met Gala while pregnant is - we can imagine - no easy feat, but the actor made it look effortless.

She went for a Burberry bodice-style gown for the event, opting for a floral cape that matched the darker pink hues of the carpet.

Next up was Lively’s Atelier Versace gown. While the top oozed old Hollywood glam, the bottom feathered out to create a blue train matching that of - you guessed it - the carpet.

As well as matching the blue and gold of the carpet, the lighter plumes of the feathered gown matched the blue of her husband’s tie.

That’s colour co-ordination at its best.

The pièce de résistance came in 2018, when she owned the gold and red carpet wearing a medieval style gown which took over 600 hours to create by hand.

The Versace dress features some pretty intricate beading, so we can see where the 600 hours disappeared.

It had Game Of Thrones vibes to it, with the ornate beading matching the gold of the main carpet and the ruby fabric matching the carpet’s undertones.

She finished off the angelic look with a spiked headpiece.

Both Lively and Reynolds were noticeably absent from the 2019 Met Gala, with reports suggesting that a combination of her pregnancy with her third child and the pair’s busy schedule had meant it wasn’t possible.

We’ll all be watching the carpet of the next Met Gala with bated breath.
