Center Grove Community Schools administrators said they are disappointed in a student gathering that didn't follow coronavirus-related orders from state and health officials, and added that the event will be taken into consideration as decisions are made about future events, including graduation.

A photo of the gathering was included in an open letter to the senior class that published Wednesday in the Trojaneer, Center Grove High School’s student newspaper.

In the picture, at least 50 teens posed for a group photo in what’s identified as the Hall of Excellence parking lot at Center Grove High School by the Trojaneer. Their faces have been blurred.

In the front row, several are holding signs including ones that say “quarantine sucks” and “senior week.”

The gathering, which happened Wednesday evening according to the open letter, violates current requirements from Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb to limit gatherings to 25 people as well as social distancing guidelines.

Additionally, Indiana schools are closed through June 30, per the governor.

Center Grove administrators said they were not aware of the gathering prior to the open letter's publication.

"Administrators are disappointed in this action and the decision to not follow appropriate social distancing and CDC recommendations by the students and parents involved in this event," district spokesperson Stacy Conrad wrote in an email to IndyStar.

School buildings closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus earlier this spring, causing students to miss out on their usual end-of-year activities in person. Districts have worked to adjust plans for milestones such as graduation to allow celebrations, even if they aren't what was originally planned.

Earlier this week, Center Grove announced plans to postpone graduation and have an in-person, outdoor commencement ceremony on July 11.

In the district's response to IndyStar, Conrad wrote that "administrators will take all situations and guidance into account when making the final decisions on graduation and any other events."

The district previously said decisions about graduation audience limits will be made closer to July 11 and the district will follow all social distancing and gathering limitations in place at that time, “which may limit the number of guests, or cause us to split the ceremony into smaller gatherings,” according to Center Grove’s website.

Per Holcomb’s plan, gatherings of over 250 people will be allowed starting July 4, if previous stages stay on track.
