Black Lives Matter protesters rallying against police brutality gathered outside Los Angeles City Hall Friday afternoon, before moving through downtown LA streets in a mostly peaceful protest before fists started flying.
Friday marks the third straight day of Southern California protests over police brutality targeting Black Americans, spurred by the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Los Angeles Police Department officers flanked the crowd on bicycles as they moved down Figueroa.
Officers responded to 5th and Olive streets where a bus stop was being vandalized, and a protester threw some type of liquid at the officer. A scuffle ensued, before the officer was pulled away from the crowd.
Protesters also began hurling garbage at officers, leading to a scuffle and leading to officers forming skirmish lines.
One demonstrator in the crowd holding a sign put himself between the line of protesters and officers, apparently calling for protesters to stop throwing refuse.
One person was detained, and the crowd began to disperse.
The protest came the day the white Minneapolis police officer, who was caught on camera kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Raucous protests preceded the arrest and charges in the days before, with protesters setting a Minneapolis precinct on fire, and multiple arrests across the nation.
Ex-officer Derek Chauvin, 44, was captured on camera kneeling on Floyd's neck as Floyd said, "Please, I can't breathe." Floyd was being arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill at a small grocery store. Witnesses also can be heard on camera pleading with the officer to let him up, as he was not resisting.
At least nine were arrested in Fontana Thursday night after rocks were thrown at businesses, vehicles and officers.
America also woke up Friday to the news that during the violent protests in Minneapolis, four members of a CNN crew were arrested, with little explanation, live on television.
The governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz later apologized to CNN, saying he takes total responsibility.
