Hundreds of people gathered at 412 Church Murrieta for in-person worship services Sunday, May 24.

The large southwest Riverside County congregation first brought back indoor gatherings on May 3, Pastor Tim Thompson said.

Such gatherings are temporarily banned, though Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday he would issue guidance by Monday on reopening churches.

“We’re letting people self-social distance,” Thompson said. “They’re welcome to wear their masks, but we don’t require it.”

Thompson is among 1,200 members of the clergy who sent a letter Wednesday, May 20, to Newsom urging he let churches begin meeting indoors by Sunday, May 31, according to the letter, signed by Murrieta attorney Robert Tyler.

The signers declared they will hold in-person services the last Sunday of the month no matter what the governor does.

The state earlier decided houses of worship could hold drive-up services in parking lots, but not meet indoors, while coronavirus pandemic restrictions are in place.
