At noon today, around 50 protesters met at the Humboldt County Courthouse in Eureka to bring attention to their concerns about the Stay-at-Home orders instituted to help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Ryan Rice of Hydesville talks with a fellow supporter of the Open Humboldt movement at last week’s protest. He later talked to us.

After last week’s protest, we reached out to one of the organizers, Ryan Rice, owner of a construction company. “We’re hoping by protesting and writing letters and having this Facebook page [Open Up Humboldt County for Business], people realize our rural Humboldt County doesn’t fit the criteria. It’s not one size fits all.”

He said that protesters were asked to follow the laws but to get their point across. “We just want to make sure if we have these protests that we’re kind and we follow the laws that are in place–Six feet away and a mask. We posted those guidelines on our Facebook page.” He added though that he wasn’t policing people who didn’t obey the requests.

“Although I don’t necessarily agree with the mask order,” he told us, “out of respect…I think our message comes a lot better if we are kind and respectful. We will be factual and educated when discussing the issues.”

He explained his concerns with the SIP rules, “Our county being in a place where it is already hard to balance a budget, the lack of revenue is going to create a chain effect..They will have to create budget cuts…We need those county depts fully staffed. [For instance] we need more maintenance workers out there fixing our roads. The tax cuts could deplete money for that.”

UPDATE Saturday: We spoke again to Ryan Ryce Saturday morning and he stated, “I would like to point out that there were two different groups there at the same time and individuals on their own. I would also like to mention for the record, I don’t condone two of the signs in the pictures. “Compliance is Communism” and “Dr. Frankovich out of Humboldt”. Neither of these represents our message and would be deleted from our page immediately. Our message is simply to open under the guidelines set forth by authorities. We only disagree with the timeline of the openings.”
