INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ABC21) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is releasing more information into the fatal shooting of a man by an IMPD officer.
Thursday night, mourners organized a vigil, and elsewhere, protestors gathered over the shooting and killing of Dreasjon Reed.
Wednesday evening, officers reported trying to pull over a vehicle driving recklessly. When the driver didn't stop, police chased after him.
The chase was called off, but minutes later, another office spotted the vehicle pulling into the back of a business and confronted the suspect.
A report from IMPD states the driver got out of the vehicle and ran from the officer. According to the report, the officer chased the suspect and deployed his taser, which wasn't effective, and "an exchange of gunfire between the driver and the officer followed. The driver was struck by the gunfire."
The driver, identified as Dreasjon Reed, died at the scene.
The officer wasn't hurt.
The department says officers found a gun near Reed at the scene that matched one Reed had been seen posing with on social media.
According to investigators, evidence indicates shots were fired from the officer's weapon and Reed's weapon.
According to the Associated Press, events surrounding the shooting were livestreamed on Facebook, including comments by a responding detective that the police chief called "unacceptable."
The IMPD says an Internal Affairs investigation is taking place.
