The Korea Baseball Organization kicked off its 2020 season on Tuesday with the nation making progress against the Covid-19 pandemic. The KBO is playing games without fans, enforcing social distancing and no spitting, and also requiring daily testing of players.
Samsung Lions pitcher Ben Lively showed off the testing process he goes through in a chart with John Clark of NBC 10 Philadelphia. Coronavirus testing involves a sizable swab into the back of his mouth and then a swab deep into his nose. Players undergo temperature checks as well, but the swab is important in finding asymptomatic players.
If any major sports are going to get underway in the United States, this is one part of the process that will be involved. Even with players are quarantined away, testing will be critical to avoiding a further outbreak within a given league.
Lively gets the start for the Lions on Wednesday, with first pitch against the NC Dinos scheduled for 5:30 a.m. ET. The Dinos shut out the Lions 4-0 in the opener on Tuesday.
