Not quite in the eyes-glued can’t look away negative sense anymore, but the name of the mixing bowl band welcoming all Marietta High School alumni to town Saturday has still stuck.
“Whatever you’re seeing on the stage, that’s Train Wreck. It might not be the whole picture. But if you stay the whole night, you’ll get to see everybody play,” said Wendell Walker, now of Atlanta, Ga., as he headed north to Marietta Thursday. “We call it the Train Wreck band because at the beginning we didn’t know how well it would pull together. Without any rehearsal or anything, we just show up that day and play this list of songs that we’re playing. And if it goes off the rails, well heck, you wanted to see this. You can’t look away…But at this point, it’s not really much of a train wreck. It’s it’s gotten pretty highly polished.”
The band is a mixture of any Tiger alumni who used to play in high school bands, some who still play to this day in differing configurations across the county.
“We have 15-16 alumni musicians, several who travel in from out of town once a year to participate,” said organizer David Tenney, class of 1986. “This year we have people coming from Atlanta, Ga., Nashville, Tenn., Joplin, Mo., Melbourne, Fla. and Columbus.”
The all-class reunion, also often called Tiger Roar, formed for the class’s 30th milestone.
“Suzi Adams (Hendrickson Dickson) was huge in that first year. And has always been there with us every year,” said Walker. “She was instrumental in the beginning of this thing. And making it happen… she knows how to put things together.”
Dickson recalled how much the first year brought to life connections between classes, and memories of moving up from the former Marietta Junior High to the current high school building together.
Now, she’s excited to see the faces celebrate bigger than pre-pandemic times.
“I’m always excited just to see people happy,” said Dickson. “We have had revolving members of this band every year, different people able to come that would have played in marching band, would have had rock bands, some who have been on bigger stages or play locally. There’s just so much talent out of the alumni that gets showcased.”
“It’s not like any other kind of reunion, because it’s all-classes we can all get together with people we grew up with,” said Tenney. “The whole vision is to have multiple class reunions that they may be doing their dinner, or golfing and that kind of thing, during the day and early evening, and then everybody gets together for the all class Tiger Roar at the Adelphia in the evening. And then those different classes don’t have to worry about finding entertainment.”
And with Walker directing different combinations of alumni, Tenney said, the show takes on a woven quality that blends mostly rock and roll between the 1970s and 1990s into a night of community pride.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Adelphia, with the show beginning at 8 p.m. and open to the public with $12 entry at the door.
