Along with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, excitement was in the air as all eyes were glued to the sky for Wednesday’s Wings Over Warren Airshow at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
As one of the most popular events of the Cheyenne Frontier Days, a diverse crowd of first-timers, Wyoming regulars and people from out of the state gathered to be in awe of the Thunderbirds.
Lifelong Wyoming resident Dave Parsons said he has gone to see the Thunderbirds show several times.
“I always get excited about excellence wherever you find it,” Parsons said. “The excellence of the Air Force and the demonstration of the entire aerospace industries put together in these airplanes. And the quality of the pilots who control them. To see the entire result of people dedicated to doing a good job.”
Multiple children in the crowd pointed and shouted, “Wow!” as their eyes followed the planes’ paths of smoke. Attendees chatted to one another about their childhood memories of watching the show or how their grandparents used to watch the same show back when it first started.
The Thunderbirds have been performing in Cheyenne since 1953. The airmen perform aerobatics to showcase the incredible skills of Air Force pilots to crowds all over the world through displays of “pride, precision and professionalism,” according to the Thunderbirds’ website.
Since then, the air show has continued to bring a community together to observe and cheer on the excellence of pilots.
This year, only 1,500 cars were allowed to park at the base for the “drive-in” style viewing. People arrived as early as 5 a.m., with gates opening at 6 a.m.
Once the free event hit capacity, people chose other locations in the area to watch the show. Numerous parking lots surrounding the base were filled with people tailgating, spending time with their families and honoring the military.
“I think all Americans find a sense of pride in what their country has put together. (They’re) glad to be protected by people who put their lives on the line,” Parsons said.
The show kicked off with Air Force jumpers leaping from planes and parachuting to the ground. The National Anthem was performed as the first airman carried a U.S. flag upon landing, followed by jumpers carrying flags that represent military branches.
Six planes performed seven different types of demonstrations during the show. The Thunderbirds’ seven maneuvers include a delta roll, a crossover break, a trail to diamond roll, a five-card loop, an opposing knife-edge pass, a line break loop and a high bomb burst.
The roar of the planes took over the area, as shapes of smoke filled the sky for 45 minutes of exhilaration. At one point, the Thunderbirds formed a heart of smoke. The show concluded with the appearance of a B-52 plane.
F.E. Warren Air Force base has been the location for the show since 2019.
“Not only the quality, but the rarity (of the show) — you don’t see it everyday,” Parsons said.
