Thousand of Muslims gathered on Harrisburg’s City Island Tuesday morning to celebrate the Islamic Festival of the Sacrifice, called Eid al-Adha.
It is one of two official holidays observed within Islam and honors Abraham’s willingness to obey God’s command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. At the last minute, the religious tale goes, God provided a lamb for Abraham to sacrifice instead.
As the morning sun rose over downtown Harrisburg, Imam Dr. Rawaa Hussain, of the Masjid (mosque) Al-Sabereen in Harrisburg, led the prayer on the soccer stadium on City Island.
Eid al-Adha in 2021 began at sundown July 19 and runs through sundown July 20.
