TODAY, PROTESTERS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE GOVERNOR’S MANSION, TERRACE HILL, TO SUPPORT SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THE STATE. NINE AREA EDUCATION AGENCIES OR AREAS FACE BUDGET CUTS NEXT YEAR. EARLIER THIS YEAR, IOWA REPUBLICANS AGREED ON CUTTING NEARLY $30 MILLION. THE AREA OF CENTRAL IOWA SAYS THEY WILL HAVE TO REDUCE STAFF, WHICH MEANS LESS SERVICES FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. SO MY DAUGHTER WAS HELPED TO LEARN HOW TO WALK WITH THE AIR SUPPORT THEY HELPED HER COMMUNICATE WITH COMMUNICATION DEVICES WHEN SHE COULDN’T SPEAK HERSELF. AND THIS IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT I WILL STAND BEHIND EVERY DAY. UM, AND HOPEFULLY GET THE VOICE OUT THERE. Demonstrators gather in Des Moines to protest cuts to Iowa's Area Education Agencies
Protesters gathered at Terrace Hill Sunday afternoon in support of the Iowa's Area Education Agencies (AEA) that support special education in the state.The protest happened outside Gov. Kim Reynolds and first gentleman Kevin Reynolds' "Christmas at Terrace Hill" event.Earlier this year, Republican lawmakers agreed to reduce state funding to the agencies by nearly $30 million."My daughter was helped to learn how to walk with the AEA's support. They helped her communicate with communication devices when she couldn't speak herself. And this is an organization that I will stand behind every day and hopefully get the voice out there," Heather Seavers, who participated in the protest, said. In a statement shared with the Quad City Times, Gov. Reynolds said, in part, "While the AEAs will continue to serve students with disabilities, changes are necessary to improve student outcomes. A comprehensive review of AEAs will help identify solutions. Parents can be assured that their children will continue to receive the services they need."
