Musician Marty Dread joins a few hundred protesters gathered in Olowalu on Tuesday morning demonstrating against plans to bury huge amounts of toxic waste from the Lahaina fire above the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center. The ash and debris is believed to be contaminated with arsenic, lead, cobalt, copper and an array of other harmful substances. Speakers included musicians Wilmont Kahaiali’i, John Cruz (photo below) and Lukas Nelson. Kahaiali’i said “Olowalu is a Puuhonua, a place of refuge, not a place of refuse. It is a wahi pana of safety and sanctuary from the chaos and conflict often caused by those who are too indifferent to care about the hanu ola that flows from the aina to the la’au, and from the la’au to us. Olowalu is a sacred space worthy of our collective aloha so that it may continue to be a sanctuary for generations to come.” A giant landfill is already being constructed in the valley. A Maui County Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 9 a.m. will address the site issue.
