FLUSHING, MI -- Families lined Coutant Street for a front-row seat to see floats and enjoy city pride on Wednesday, June 9, as a parade kicked off Flushing Summerfest.

Flushing and Flushing Township police cars led the way for the parade that began at Central Elementary School and wounds its way through the city.

Numerous local organizations, politicians and businesses followed handing out coupons and flyers to residents and candy to the excited children along the route.

Flushing resident Jackie Greenwald joyously waved while seated curbside to each float, joined by her two children Josie, 5, and Jesse, 2.

It was Jesse’s first parade ever, and he got to experience with more extended family, including an aunt, uncle and grandmother as well.

“It feels amazing. I am loving this so much,” said Greenwald, a teacher at Seymour Elementary in Flushing. “It’s so nice to have a little bit of normalcy, and to see the kids have so much fun.”

The Flushing Summerfest, hosted by the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, continues today, June 10 through Sunday, June 13 at the Riverview Park, 230 S. Cherry St., in downtown Flushing.

The festival last year was postponed and then ultimately cancelled due to the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lesly Foreman, service coordinator, for the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, said.

Other activities throughout the festival include a balloon and clown show, live music, Empty Canvas painting interaction, a safety clinic, a book giveaway and more. All the activities are free, according to festival organizers.

Music group 1 Fifty takes the stage at 6 p.m. Friday, June 11 and Fleaflicker performs at 8 p.m. Friday.

Tickets and armbands for carnival rides, presented by the Skerbeck Family Carnival, can be purchased online.

Marketplace vendors such as authors, U.S. Army National Guard and others will line Cherry Street to offer their products and services.

The event comes to an end on Sunday with a pancake breakfast and sunrise yoga at Primary Prevention Physiotherapy, 209 S. Cherry St.

Festival goers can choose to wear masks, but it won’t be a requirement and social distancing won’t be strictly enforced, but families will be encouraged to stay with their groups, Foreman said.
