It’s not often Penn State basketball has such a marquee prospect from its own backyard.
Bellefonte native Dereck Lively II is one of the Nittany Lions’ top targets for the 2022 recruiting class, and the No. 1-ranked player in Pennsylvania.
The 7-foot-1 center is picking up more and more interest from some of the top programs in the country. Lively recently took an unofficial visit to North Carolina and has visits scheduled with Kentucky (June 20) and Duke (June 29).
Lively was back home in Happy Valley on Monday for an unofficial visit with the Nittany Lions.
He provided an update on his recruitment process with the Nittany Lions in an interview with 247Sports’ Dushawn London.
“They've been bringing this hometown hero mentality and how this is the home I’ve mainly been growing up in since I was younger,” Lively said. To be a part of the family that I've always been a part of. Being in the hallways that I've walked through and I've always been to the games so it's just something that I've been a part of and imagined myself playing in. It's another option that I'm always thinking about.”
“With my mom working there I've always been around the men's and women's basketball teams because I would be in her office. Seeing what they have and the energy around Penn State, how it’s great to be a Nittany Lion and stay a hometown hero is what I like hearing and what I can see myself being a part of.”
Whitmore, Mintz in town
Other top 2022 targets were on campus for visits this past weekend as well, including Archbishop Spalding (MD) forward Cam Whitmore and Oak Hill Academy combo guard Judant Mintz.

Whitmore is the No. 5-ranked player in Maryland and No. 109 nationally. In addition to Penn State, he holds offers from Maryland, Florida, Villanova and Illinois, among others.
Mintz is the top prospect from the D.C. area and ranked No. 91 nationally. His other offers include Georgetown, Pitt, DePaul and Florida.
He’ll be announcing his commitment on June 18. Georgetown and Pitt look like the favorites, but the Nittany Lions are firmly in the mix.
2022 four-star Judah Mintz (@Jmintz10) will announce his college decision June 18th.
Took official visits to Pitt, Georgetown, Penn State.
