As the extended holiday weekend winds down, many New Yorkers gathered in large groups to celebrate.

But what does this mean for coronavirus cases in the city?

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted out the COVID-19 indicators showing that there were 62 new COVID-19-related hospitalizations, 188 new cases and a .84 positively rate citywide over a seven-day rolling average.

The introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine played a large role in making people more comfortable gathering for the Fourth of July holiday this year compared to 2020.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that over 21 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed to New Yorkers. Over 66% of people over the age of 18 are now fully vaccinated and 54.6% of all New Yorkers in general are fully vaccinated.

This all comes as the Delta variant of the virus has been detected in all 50 states. The variant is spreading rapidly and is causing severe illness, according to health officials.

The Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have proven to be highly effective against the Delta variant.

Health officials are urging everyone to continue to wear masks even if they are fully vaccinated.
