Wizards of the Coast is swinging open the doors of its Magic the Gathering: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms press event to the public today, letting you explore Faerun and discover new cards from the set for yourself.
Following a press- and influencer-only opening today, Wizards has announced its Gather event for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms will be available for all to experience tomorrow. The event is the second of its kind, following the Strixhaven: School of Mages Gather event I called a "masterclass" in PR.
Much like the Strixhaven event, the Forgotten Realms Gather features a recreation of the Forgotten Realms, and places attendees in a top-down interface much like an RPG. From there, you can explore the environments and partake in quests while also talking to other people over video and voice chat in the immediate area. Venture far enough, and you'll find 10 unannounced cards from the upcoming set.
To enter the Gather, go to the website and, from 17:00 UTC on July 7, 2021, you’ll be able to create a new space using the same map used for the event. You’ll be able to share this space with your friends by sending them the link and password. This map will be available for approximately six weeks, giving you enough time to really dig in to what’s on offer.
I loved the Strixhaven event, and my experience with the Forgotten realms one hasn't changed my opinion at all. An open, sociable place to explore the new set together is perfect for COVID-era and accessible PR events, and the added gamification of having quests and stories to follow throughout is excellent. Gather did struggle a bit to maintain a stable connection with so many influencers talking on video chat at times, so letting the public make their own instances for them and their friends is definitely a good decision.
The Adventures in the Forbidden Realms Gather will be freely available for approximately six weeks, starting from 17:00 UTC today (July 7, 2021).
