For the first time in over two years, AmeriCorps Seniors Volunteers, serving with the Fort Hays State University Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs, from Barton and Pawnee Counties gathered together for an in-person, in-service meeting at the Senior Center in Great Bend. Meetings throughout the pandemic have been by Zoom and drive-thru events. During the May 18 meeting, the volunteers enjoyed meeting in person, sharing stories about themselves, eating a good meal and honoring Senior Companion volunteer Theresa Hall from Great Bend for her six years of service. Senior Companion Program Coordinator Jessica Shank provided confidentiality training.
Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and friends to children with exceptional needs. Senior Companions provide daily assistance and friendship to adults needing support to enable them to remain living in their homes as independently as possible. Both provide opportunities for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active by serving in their communities.
These Programs are sponsored by Fort Hays State University and funded by AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps is the federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges. Support for these programs is also provided by many of the counties in which volunteers serve.
Both the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs are currently accepting volunteer applications. Call 785-628-5809 for more information.
