Hundreds of women gathered on Monday, May 16 at the MLive 2022 Women’s Summit for a day of connecting with mentors, learning from each other and celebrating the women trailblazers of Michigan.

The two-part program took place at the Crowne Plaza Lansing West, starting with Mentoring Monday at 8 a.m.

WLNS-TV and WLAJ-TV news anchor Lauren Thompson and MLive Media Group Senior Director of News Kelly Frick kicked off the summit’s morning program, a mentoring movement dedicated to gathering professional women together across the United States.

Only about a third of businesswomen worldwide report having a formal mentor, according to a DDI World survey. Even though research from the University of California Haas School of Business shows women benefit more from connecting with a high-status mentor more than men.

Mentoring Monday aims to plug this gap by connecting 15 influential mentors with women in a casual environment. Roundtable discussions include topics like creating your own opportunities, networking in a hybrid world, thriving in a male-dominated environment and financial fearlessness.

Leigh Hunt had been Mattison Corriveau’s mentor for about the last two years when they decided to attend Monday’s summit together.

Hunt said the networking with other women and seeing the role they play in their perspective fields during the sessions taught her how she can be more intentional going forward.

“We all have a lot of common ground, no matter what industry we’re in,” Hunt said.

Corriveau said she noticed in the sessions how a lot of women have the same thoughts and worries, but it’s important for women to see other women leaders in order to thrive.

“Everyone mentioned that imposter syndrome,” Corriveau said. “I thought it was really sad that a lot of women all share that thing, but also making aware that we’re all feeling it and it’s something that we need to work on because we are capable.”

Halfway through Mentoring Monday, Andi Simon, author of the book “Rethink-- Smashing the myths of women in business” provided the keynote address.

Mama Sol, a motivational speaker, lyricist and teacher from Flint, led a discussion on self love. She said since she’s grown “past the stage of self sabotage,” she has now made it her life’s work to help others.

“I don’t even consider myself leading, it’s more of a reciprocation because if you attend a workshop entitled self-love, evidently you love yourself and we’re already there,” Mama Sol said.

Mama Sol was also featured as a keynote speaker along with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson at the afternoon’s Women Who Shape the State Luncheon and Award Ceremony which took place from noon to 2 p.m.

The program honored 13 Michigan women who have gone above and beyond to make their communities a better place. The 2022 class of Women Who Shape the State consisted of Michigan women who are entrepreneurs, activists and leaders in their local communities.
