Basten Wins Steeple Title, More Gophers Gather Medals on Day 2 - GopherSports.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second straight day the University of Minnesota track and field program had a back-to-back Big Ten Champion. Graduate student Alec Basten won his second straight 3000m steeplechase title on the Gophers' home track on Saturday night. 

On top of Basten's performance, three others earned silver medals with Matthew Wilkinson (3000m steeplechase), Nyalaam Jok (high jump) and Shelby Frank (discus) all earning Big Ten runner-up status. 

It was a wire-to-wire victory for Basten in his defense of his 3000m steeple title. With WIlkinson at his hip, the duo controlled the race and the two separated themselves in the final 400m with both kicking into a 64 second and 65 second final lap. With plenty of legs left Basten was able to pump up the home crowd in his final 50 meters and captured the title in a time of 8:45.06 while WIlkinson finished in a time of 8:46.39 for a combined 18 points in the event for the Maroon and Gold. 


Coming in as the Big Ten favorite, Shelby Frank did all she could and then some with two separate lifetime bests in the event. Her second throw surpassed her previous school record throw (58.00m) that she set just a few weeks ago and entered the final throw in the top position. Indiana's Jayden Ulrich, who fouled four of her six throws, launched a mark of 59.01m (193-7) pushing Frank to the silver medal position. Frank did not shy away in the moment and launched the disc 58.85m (193-1) on her final attempt, just short of Ulrich's top mark. Frank's throw is currently No. 5 in the nation. 
In her second championship experience, Jok proved she could calm the nerves and captured her first Big Ten medal on Saturday afternoon. Jok, a native of Annandale, Minn., was perfect through four heights and had a solid hold on the top position. Jok, like the remaining three competitors at this point, all missed their first attempts at 1.82m (5-11 1/2) and eventually Jenna Rogers of Nebraska was able to clear the bar leaving Jok with a silver medal with a clearance of 1.79m (5-10 1/2). 
Also scoring for the Golden Gophers on Saturday was Hannah Morris in the women's long jump. The senior from Chicago Heights, Ill., flew to an opening mark of 6.01m (19-8 3/4) that carried her to a first place position through the preliminary jumps (first three). Morris was unable to improve on her mark in her final three attempts and settled for a fifth-place finish, tying her best finish in the event in her collegiate career. 

Also snagging a pair of points for Minnesota was Jaydon Antoine in the men's long jump. With a mark of 7.38m (24-2 1/2) Antoine was in third after his first attempt. After matching that mark on his second attempt Antoine was unable to further his mark on his final four attempts and settled for the seventh-place finish in front of the Minnesota heavy crowd. 

Six more Gophers earned spots in Sunday's final on Saturday. The dynamic 400m duo of Janielle Josephs and Jayla Campbell finished fifth and sixth in their preliminary races with Campbell clocking a 53.55 and Josephs coming in at 53.60. Odell Frye and Amira Young matched the 400m crew with two trips to the 100m final on Sunday. Frye qualified on time at 11.55 while Young was able to capture a victory in her heat to automatically qualify. Kion Benjamin joined in on the straightaway fun with a trip to the 100m final to defend his Big Ten title in the event. Benjamin cruised to a 10.23 time, good enough for the second-best preliminary time in the event. Lastly Anastasia Korzenowski came away with a time qualifier in the 800m, earning the spot with a time of 2:08.99. 

Sunday's action will begin at 11 a.m. CT with the Big Ten Network covering the event throughout the day. The women's triple jump, men's javelin and men's pole vault will begin the day with the men's 4x400m relay ending the day at 3:45 p.m. CT.
