CLEVELAND — Community activists in Cleveland gathered to talk about the mass shooting in Buffalo and combating white supremacy in their community.

What You Need To Know

  • Cleveland Black on Black Crime Inc. held its weekly Wednesday meeting, focused on the tragic events in Buffalo

  • President Alfred Porter Jr. said issues like white supremacy and voter suppression are still hurting the black community

  • Judy Martin, the leader of Survivors/Victims of Tragedy, was one speaker who said she believes white supremacy needs to be stopped

Those who gathered at the church where Black on Black Crime Inc. has its meetings showed solidarity for the victims in Buffalo and said the issues facing that community hit too close to home.

Activist Art McKoy led prayer, discussion and songs to inspire and motivate the community.

“It was a lot of pain but a lot of reality,” said President Alfred Porter Jr.

Porter was one of many who’ve been shaken by what police are calling a racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo.

“It hurt me a lot that in 2022, the same things are happening that happened, I will say in the 1960s, 1950s, 40s and even earlier on," Porter said. "Ever since the 400 plus years of slavery. With that being said, I felt like, ‘has anything really, totally changed for us?’”

Porter said he believes Black communities in Cleveland are under attack by not just white supremacy, but also issues like voter suppression.

Judy Martin leads Survivors Victims of Tragedy. Martin lost her son to a murder almost three decades ago. She wanted to go to Buffalo to support the victims and their families, but wasn’t able to. She said she believes action needs to be taken to stop white supremacy and racism.

“I wish I had the answer that everyone would listen to, because even after 28 years, after my youngest son was killed, I still think love, patience and tolerance should be stronger and win out over hate, bigotry and racism," said Martin. "It should, but the people who have love patience and tolerance should stop being silent."

Activists also talked about the importance of stopping black on black crime within Cleveland’s neighborhoods.
