Angelenos held a vigil at a Woodland Hills park Saturday, May 28, organized by the San Fernando Valley chapter of Moms Demand Action for Guns Sense in America, to honor victims of mass shootings throughout the country — and to demand an end to gun violence.
This month, mass shootings at a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y., at a church in Laguna Woods and at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, made national headlines and once again have renewed calls for stricter gun laws.
At least 214 mass shootings have occurred in the United States this year, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive.
Saturday’s vigil of about 50 participants at Warner Center Park was part of a growing public demonstration of concern, also seen this week as students in Saugus, where two students were killed in 2019, joined student walkouts around the country. A walkout at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills also drew hundreds.
“This is just a moment for us to sort of grieve a bit as a community,” said Stacey Moseley, a member of Moms Demand Action. “It’s a general trauma that we’re all recovering from.”
Those who attended the event were encouraged to write letters to their representatives in support of gun violence prevention.
